Ambiance Antiques & Collectibles
Ambiance Antiques & Collectibles, formerly Antiques of Piermont, recently opened in Englewood. The store, said Ilene Alt, owner, boasts a collection of antiques that will add charm to any room.
When searching for an accessory that adds ambiance to a room, many homeowners ascribe to the notion that they just don't make them like they used to.
"People love antiques," said Ilene Alt, owner of Ambiance Antiques & Collectibles. "They add charm to any room, even a modern one. One or two antiques can add a lot."
Alt, whose career in the antique industry spans more than two decades, previously owned Antiques of Piermont in New York before reopening her business inside Mitchell Simon, an Englewood-based hardware and furniture store.
Her relationship with Mitchell Simon, she said, began years ago when her husband worked in Englewood as a chiropractor.
"We'd stop in to buy a gift for his office," she recalls. "It was the only hardware store in town."
The store's location, schedule and parking situation, she said, made it an ideal choice.
Ambiance Antiques & Collectibles is a scaled-down version of its predecessor, but Alt promises that the selection of accessories will satisfy her clients.
The retail store boasts a sampling of the inventory and a photo album of additional pieces available for purchase. Among the most popular items are antique serving pieces in crystal, silver and porcelain, as well as furniture, lighting, mirrors and other accessories.
Alt does personal shopping for clients, utilizing contacts made over the course of her career to find the appropriate antique or collectible.
"Nine times out of 10 I hit the nail right on the head," she said.
She offers her perspective as a design consultant, advising clients on where and how a piece may be best used within a particular room.
The store also provides expert restoration to clients whose pieces could use a little touch-up. Restoration jobs, in fact, have been a significant source of business since the relocation to Englewood, according to Alt.
"Restoration is a lost art," she said. "It's important to maintain the integrity of a piece, rather than making it look brand new."
Alt attributes her hands-on approach to her business to the love she has for antiques and the desire to find something beautiful for her clients to have in their homes.
"You can't duplicate in a new piece what you have in an old one," said Alt of the appeal of an antique. "Old pieces were made to last 100 years. New pieces will not."
Ambiance Antiques & Collectibles is located at 15 South Dean St. in Englewood and may be reached at 201-568-2108.
